The Cubs didn't win on a walkoff today but they got the win and completed the sweep of the Indians with a 6-2 win today at Wrigley Field.
Randy Wells finally got his first major league win after he got snubbed by the bullpen and the offense in his first several starts. Wells has to be in the discussion for NL Rookie of the Year if he keeps this up. The only real competition in the NL looks like Colby Rasmus of the St. Louis Cardinals and Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Aside from Wells, the Cubs Iowa call-ups are all stepping up. Jake Fox went 1-3 today with 3 RBI's and Andres Blanco went 1-3 and continued to play great defense over at 2B. Jake Fox is sure to get a few starts as a DH in the upcoming series in Detroit starting on Tuesday.
Earlier today, the Cubs put Angel Guzman (who has been pitching very well this season) on the 15-day DL with a right tricep strain. The Cubs called up Kevin Hart who will pitch in long relief in the bullpen. Kevin did very well in minimal appearances in 2007 but struggled in the big leagues in 2008. Hart was doing very well as a starting pitcher at Iowa.
Geovany Soto is beginning to heat up. Soto hit a line-drive home run of Jeremy Sowers in the 2nd inning to give the Cubs an early 1-0 and they didn't look back after that. Derrek Lee extended his hitting streak to 18 which is tied for his career high for longest hitting streak. He had 18 straight games with a hit back in his amazing 2005 campaign. Lee went 1-4 today with an RBI. Milton Bradley also extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-3 day today.
The Cubs are back in Atlanta for one game tomorrow to make-up a rainout from June 4th. Former White Sox starter Javier Vasquez will go head-to-head against Ryan Dempster. The Cubs will then get on a plane and travel to Detroit for a 3 game series starting Tuesday at Comerica Park. Let's make it 5 in a row with a win in Atlanta and take at least 2 of 3 in Detroit.
I'll give the Cubs player of the game award to Jake Fox for his 1-3, 3 RBI day. Other options could have been Soto and Lee.
And in other news, the Cubs have gone 4-0 since I got this blog going again. Obviously I need to continue. Go Cubs!

Valspar Day at Wrigley Field 9/3/09
Valspar, the 2009 official paint of Wrigley Field, is sending Chicago sports fan, Brendan Cavanaugh, to the mound at Wrigley Field. Cavanaugh won the once in a lifetime opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch in a raffle. He will take the field on Valspar Day, September 3rd, before the Cubs play cross-town rivals, the Chicago White Sox. Valspar also is making a donation to Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity in Cavanaugh’s name during an on-field check presentation with Sam Fuld, left fielder for the Chicago Cubs. The donation will help fund community home building projects.
In addition to the on-field activities, Valspar is hosting a number of free pre-game festivities for children and adults. Outside of the stadium, fans can test their arm strength at the Radar Speed Pitch, enjoy signature concessions, and paint signs supporting the Chicago Cubs, using Valspar’s limited edition Wrigley Field paint colors – Pinstripe Blue, Ivy Green and Marquee Red. Once inside the stadium, the first 10,000 attendees will receive free Cubs t-shirts and all are welcome to take batting practice at the Wii station next to Gate D. Valspar also will be collecting donations for Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity throughout the day, inside and outside of the stadium.
